He often chooses the style of his drawing based on the the subject, and has said in interviews that his aesthetic only comes as an aside in his creative process. He's changed his style and tried many different mediums in order to keep things exciting for himself, because his full-time job as a freelancer has him desigining 9am-5pm most days.

I also do a lot straight from memory, instead of trying to replicate exactly what a tree or mountain looks like. I mean, I might be drawing trees and mountains completely wrong if I actually paid attention, but I prefer this approach and don't care if it's exact. - Sam Larson
